Characteristics of Inconel®, Hastelloy®, Incoloy®, and MP35N® Alloys

Loos and Company Medical Wire Products

In our last blog post, we looked at the characteristics of three alloys available at Loos Med Tech. Today, we are going to be looking at four additional alloys offered at Loos Med Tech: Inconel®, Hastelloy®, Incoloy®, and MP35N®. Continue reading to learn about the features and capabilities of these four alloys.

Inconel®:

Inconel® is a nickel and chromium alloy that comes in numerous grades. While the alloy is often compared to stainless steel, both alloys have many grades, making it difficult to make direct comparisons between the two. What makes Inconel® an excellent choice of material for medical applications is its wide range of features. Features of Inconel® include:

  • Operates well in extremely high temperatures
  • Very resistant to numerous chemicals and oxidation
  • Retains strength in a large temperature range
  • Resistant to saltwater and brine

Hastelloy®:

Hastelloy® is a nickel and molybdenum alloy that, similar to Inconel®, has numerous different grades. One of the main characteristics of Hastelloy® is its exceptional corrosion resistance. The alloy is so resistant it is often used in chemical and nuclear reactors. Other features of Hastelloy® include:

  • Great ductility
  • Used in high-temperature applications
  • Performs well under stress
  • Easy to fabricate and weld

Incoloy®:

Incoloy® is an alloy with a similar composition to Inconel® as it is a nickel and chromium-based alloy. Incoloy® has an extensive list of features and is most notably known for its resistance to oxidation and carbonization, even in high-temperature environments. Other features of Incoloy® include:

  • Great resistance to corrosion in numerous acidic environments
  • Excellent strength properties in high range temperatures
  • Used in many general applications
  • Performs especially well in water environments

MP35N®:

MP35N® is a nickel and cobalt alloy that is primarily known for its superior strength. Some of the primary applications of the alloy are orthopedics and catheters. However, MP35N® is also typically found in cold and marine applications too. Some of the main features of MP35N® include:

  • Excellent corrosion resistance to saltwater and hydrogen sulphide
  • High strength and ductility
  • Very resistant to stress cracks
  • Suitable for applications used in harsh environments
