Differences Between INCONEL® and MONEL®

Loos & Co Inc.

Many people wonder what the difference between INCONEL® and MONEL® are but never can find a clear answer! However, in today’s blog, we are going to look at both of these alloys by providing a breakdown and looking at what applications both are used for.

While the two alloys have a wide number of similarities, there are some key differences that customers should be aware about. Both metals are commonly used in applications with extreme heat, high temperature corrosion, and generally severe conditions. Let’s take more specific look into these two alloys so that you can get a better understanding of their capabilities.

INCONEL® is a nickel-chromium based alloy. The alloy is resistant to oxidation corrosion and withstand high temperatures. These characteristics make INCONEL® 601 an ideal choice for use in oil and gas extraction, among other applications. Drilling for oil involves harsh conditions and requires products which can withstand these conditions. The corrosion resistant properties of INCONEL® 601 make it the ideal metal for the job!

Unlike INCONEL® that is chromium based, MONEL® is a nickel-copper based alloy. MONEL® is a very strong alloy that is resistant a wide variety of elements. The alloy is resistant to sea water, sulfuric acid, and much more. These properties make the alloy a perfect choice for whole range of applications such as aerospace equipment, gasoline and freshwater tanks, among other applications.

It is also important to note that both alloys have various grades that have unique properties and characteristics.
