Choose the Right Material for Tech-Mesh: Stainless-Steel, Monel & more

The different alloys (Inconel, copper, etc.) of Tech-Mesh (wire mesh) & demister pads. Used in particle filtration, mist eliminators, distillation & more.

Efficiency and longevity are paramount in the industrial world, and using the correct materials makes all the difference. Tech-Mesh™, an innovative knitted wire mesh, is no exception.

One of the main applications of metal mesh is in demister padsspecialized for particle filtration and demisting (the separation of liquid droplets from vapor streams). The correct material for these demister pads is crucial to ensure optimal performance. In this blog, we'll explore the materials available, such as stainless steel and Monel®, to help you make an informed decision.

Stainless Steel: The Resilient Doer

Stainless steel is a widely preferred choice for Tech-Mesh™, and for good reason. It boasts exceptional corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, and longevity. These qualities make it suitable for harsh and corrosive environments, common in industries like oil and gas, chemical processing, and wastewater treatment. Stainless steel is also often used in the hospitality industry for its extended lifespan and rigorous health and safety regulations.

The durability of stainless steel ensures that Tech-Mesh™ can withstand demanding applications. Whether it's exposure to corrosive chemicals, extreme temperatures, or high mechanical stress, stainless steel demister pads hold up admirably. They are known for their longevity, often serving reliably for many years without the need for frequent replacements.

Available in grades 304, 316, 317, 321, 347, and 2205.

Monel®: Unmatched Corrosion Resistance

Monel® is a nickel-copper alloy renowned for its extraordinary corrosion resistance, especially in acidic and marine environments. For applications that involve seawater and harsh chemicals like mist eliminators in offshore oil and gas facilities, particle filtration in desalination plants, and demisting in other settings, Monel® is the choice.

The main advantage of Monel® is its ability to resist corrosion in the most challenging conditions. Not only does Monel® provide long-lasting protection against the corrosive effects of saltwater, acidic compounds, and various chemicals, but it is also known for its toughness and ability to stay maintained in extreme temperatures. Try Monel® 400, the ideal choice when safeguarding equipment and ensuring long-term performance is vital.

Other Alloys for Specialized Applications

While stainless steel and Monel® are the most commonly used materials for Tech-Mesh™, there are situations where other alloys come into play. Here are a few examples:

Aluminum & Copper: Effective and Lightweight

In less demanding environments, aluminum can be a suitable choice. It's lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and cost-effective. Aluminum demister pads are in air handling units (AHUs) and similar applications. Aluminum, knitted wire mesh, can also be used in gaskets, seals, exhaust dampeners, and EMI/RFI shielding.

Our Aluminum alloys are also our Copper alloys, C110 and C510. These alloys shine when paired with Tech-Mesh™. Copper also boosts antibacterial properties and reacts with sulfuric compounds, which makes the copper wire mesh ideal for distillation.

Specialty and Prime Nickle: Oxidation and Temperature Resistant

For harsh environments, demister pads or bulk mesh must be an alloy that can withstand corrosion, oxidization, and extreme temperatures. Luckily, Tech-Mesh™ and bulk mesh are available in Inconel® 601 and 625, Alloy 20 (aka 20Cb-3), Hastelloy (C276), and Nickle 200. With these alloys, wire mesh products thrive in oil and gas refineries, chemical plants, fertilization plants, biogas industries, power plants, and desalination plants.
