Capabilities of Various Brush Wire Materials

Aug 11, 2022 07:30 AM

Brush wire-1

One of the most overlooked features when buying brush wire is its material. There are numerous materials that brush wire can be manufactured from, and it is crucial to understand the differences and capabilities between each. Knowing your options for materials ensures you get the right type of brush wire that is suitable for your application. Continue reading to get an overview and the capabilities of each of the materials for brush wire offered at Loos & Co.

Stainless and Nickel Alloys:

  • Typically manufactured in nearly any variety of stainless steel, including 302, 304, 305, 316, and Inconel®
  • Materials commonly used
  • Excellent corrosion resistance and high strength
  • Extremely durable

Phosphor Bronze (Phos Bronze):

  • Commonly the phosphor alloy used in brush wire is Alloy 510
  • Alloy 510 is comprised of 95% copper and 5% tin
  • Has great fatigue life and low elastic modulus
  • Highly conductive

Brass:

  • Mostly manufactured in Alloy 260
  • Alloy 260 is comprised of 70% copper and 30% zinc
  • Known for being corrosion-resistant and highly conductive
  • Used in the manufacturing of all brass brushes

Low Carbon Steel:

  • Made from 0.15 carbon maximum
  • Drawn solely from zinc-coated low carbon steel, this develops into a medium tensile
  • Corrosive-resistant and high-quality product
  • Used in the manufacturing of wire brushes.

High Carbon Steel:

  • High Carbon Steel for brush wire is manufactured from Carbon C1071
  • Produces high tensile and high-quality
  • High-fatigue brush material

Nickel Silver:

  • The brush wire made from Nickel Silver is typically NiAg 745
  • NiAg 745 is a white alloy made of 65% copper, 25% zinc, and 10% nickel
  • Nickel silver brush wire provides increased corrosion resistance and tensile strengths, thanks to its nickel content
  • Often used as brush fill and in staples

By keeping the capabilities of the various materials mentioned above in mind, you are sure to choose the suitable material for your brush wire application.
