As with most of the world, those of us at LoosCo.com were overjoyed when the 33 trapped Chilean miners began emerging from the San Jose mine and reuniting with their loved ones.  Seeing the tired men and their families cheering as they exited the rescue capsule (Phoenix, it’s been dubbed) instilled in us, and all those watching, a sense of accomplishment. Working with equipment, personnel, and knowledge collected from around the globe, rescue teams had beaten the odds, reached the miners, and pulled them to safety after more than two months trapped beneath the earth.

And once again, wire rope has played its humble role. The rescue culminated with live action coverage of the Phoenix capsule being pulled out of the earth with a specially designed winch and high performance wire rope flown in from Germany. Everyone talked about the capsule, very few mentioned the rope. The wire rope enabled the 2,000 foot descent. The wire rope enabled repeated raising and lowering. The wire rope carried the load without any issues. Isn’t wire rope an amazing tool? We think so. And we also think one of these days wire rope will go from being ubiquitous yet invisible to getting the recognition it deserves.
